Killzone 2 Preview
Guerilla Games is out to prove that Killzone 2 is 2009’s best upcoming title. Their first step: creating an intuitive online experience that caters to everyone.
But before they could create an online experience, they decided to axe any offline multiplayer via split-screen. So if you want to play with your friends, you better recommend they buy a copy of the game themselves and jump on the PSN.
Looking just as good as the single-player campaign, online will support up to 32 players. Following the trend that became popular with Call of Duty 4, players can now progress online with earning ribbons and medals along with advancing through 12 military ranks.
There are six player types to play as: the scout, assault, engineer, medic, saboteur and another that wasn’t named. Each has special abilities that come with the classes such as the expected ability to revive your fallen comrades as the medic. If you continue to play within the class, you’ll unlock a secondary ability such as the medic throwing out medical packs. The best feature for the player types is the ability Guerilla Games is providing for players to combine classes to take advantage of their perks.
Jumping online, players can choose their gameplay requirements such as one of the eight different maps or one of the five mission types. There are two options instantly upon starting online: Quick Join or Regular Join. Quick Join throws you immediately into a match against equal competition. With a lot of choices online, players will be able to determine their own type of online experience.
When running around on the battlefield, players have the option to invite teammates to your squad and group up together. Squads are manageable up to four players and joining a squad provides you the chance to see your squad’s health and a chat channel.
You’ll also be able to create or join a clan of up to 64 total players along with clan tournaments that support up to 256 clans. Clans will gain their own pages on Killzone.com to interact with one another and see how their teammates are doing with their stats. This feature should be the most attracting due to the growing demand for players to join clans.
The last feature I want to speak about is the inclusion of
choosing where you want to spawn on the map. Players will be able to see a video
in their spawn screen of all the locations on the map they can spawn and when
viewing the location, they’ll see a preview of what is going on surrounding the
location. So if you decide to spawn in front of a person camping the area, it’s
your own fault.
Killzone 2 will support Playstation Network Trophies and will be arriving in
2009 only on the PS3.
