BioShock Preview
Late last summer, BioShock hit the PC and Xbox 360, garnering great success commercially and critically, with many critics calling the game an artistic achievement and netting it many Game of the Year awards (including ours). Unfortunately, PS3 owners where left in the dust. Luckily, Sony fans are about to get their comeuppance, and then some. BioShock for the PS3 will feature the original hit game tweaked for the PS3, as well as exclusive features in the way of downloadable episodes. At E3 2008, 2K was on hand to show off some of these added features, as well as a progress report on a game that is sure to deliver the goods to PS3 fans everywhere.
BioShock for PS3 features new downloadable episodes, called Challenge Rooms. These Challenge Rooms operate outside of the game’s narrative, instead working more like pulp fiction within the BioShock universe. These episodes require some creative thinking, including problem solving and clever use of weapons and plasmids in order to proceed.
The episode that 2K showed off required the player to rescue a Little Sister from a Ferris wheel that is having a host of electrical problems. Therefore, the player must search the level for anything that could help conduct some electricity and repair the broken controls, moving the Little Sister down bit by bit. As the stage takes place at a carnival, you’re also able to use your plasmids to mess around with other games, like using telekinesis to throw a ball at some cans, netting yourself an item.
The missions feature a timer, and players will get trophies for completing them within a certain time frame.
Graphically, BioShock is looking every bit as good as its Xbox 360 counterpart, with great graphical effects and a smooth clip. Look for it to release this fall.
